Pongal Celebrations 2026
NPS Chennai celebrated Pongal on 12th January with immense joy and creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with tradition, learning, and togetherness. The school campus was beautifully adorned with colourful thoranams and intricate kolams, reflecting the rich heritage of Tamil culture and setting the perfect tone for the festivities. Adding to the festive spirit, the children came dressed in traditional attire such as pattupavadai and kurtas, making the campus come alive with colour and cultural elegance.
Pongal, a harvest festival celebrated to express gratitude to Surya, the Sun God, symbolizes prosperity, new beginnings, and happiness. To mark this auspicious occasion, a brief pooja was conducted, during which our respected Principals, Ms. Radhika and Ms. Ranjani, offered obeisance to the Sun God, symbolising positivity, light, and reverence for knowledge.
Following this, students gathered in the small playground where the traditional Pongal pot was placed. With great excitement and curiosity, the children witnessed the rice boiling over, a significant ritual that represents abundance and good fortune. As the milk overflowed, the students joyfully made traditional sounds, celebrating the moment with laughter and enthusiasm.
The cultural programme added colour and energy to the celebration. Students performed traditional folk dances such as Kavadiattam, Karagattam, and Kolattam, captivating the audience with their rhythmic movements and vibrant costumes. The celebration was further enriched by a soulful song rendered by our music teacher, Ms. Madhumitha, which the children enthusiastically sang along to, filling the air with joy and harmony.
The festival also served as a meaningful learning experience for the students. Grade 1 children actively participated in making kolams using dotted patterns, enhancing their creativity and fine motor skills. Grade 2 students engaged in crafting Mayilai Thoranam using traditional mango leaves, gaining insight into the cultural significance of natural decorations. Teachers took this opportunity to explain the importance of Pongal, its rituals, and the values of gratitude and respect for nature, making the celebration both enjoyable and educational.
Adding to the delight of the day, the children were treated to a traditional Pongal feast, which they relished with great excitement. The festivities concluded on a joyful note as the students flew colourful kites, running across the grounds and watching them soar high in the sky, symbolizing freedom, hope, and happiness.
The Pongal celebration at NPS Chennai was a beautiful blend of tradition, culture, and joy, leaving behind cherished memories and instilling in the young minds a deep appreciation for India’s rich cultural heritage.
