Remembering Ramanujan, 2021
A famous mathematician once said ,”Mathematics is the most beautiful and most powerful creation of the human spirit”. To celebrate the spirit of mathematical learning and to explore various mathematical concepts creatively, National Mathematics Day was celebrated on December 22, 2021 in honour of India’s own mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Extensive planning went into creating age-appropriate math activities with a fun element that would be conducted by teachers across classes. Separate workshops were conducted by the Math department to handhold teachers and help them understand how the activities were to be executed in class.
On the day, teachers explained the relevance of the celebrations to the students. An animated video with an enlightening narration on the life and works of the Mathematician S Ramanujan was played. Children were thrilled to know about his exemplary contributions and his passion towards math.
The video was followed by the math activities planned for each class. From skips counting using craft for primary classes to Math themed charades, the activities witnessed active participation from the students. In middle school, students were given an opportunity to submit images on math concepts in form of cartoon, jokes or digital art, a week ahead. Children poured in their creative skills and submitted many images. Selected images were displayed to the children on the Remembrance Day. Everyone had a good laugh reading the jokes and appreciated their friends.
Overall, it was a fun-filled day of learning for the children who exhibited unparalleled excitement and ended the day creating their own birthday magic squares, following the sample shown to them, created by the great mathematician Ramanujan.
