As we watched the students dressed smartly in their sports uniforms take the field, Dean Karnazes’ words come to the mind: ”Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must but never give up.” December 22nd and 23rd witnessed students at NPSI-Chennai displaying sportsmanship and paying tribute to teamwork as they celebrated the 9th Annual Sports Day. While December 22nd had belonged to the young students of Grades 1 to 3, Grades 4 to 12 took over the sports field the next day. Students greatly enjoyed the bright and windy day outside, and the day’s final competitions were marked by both enthusiastic cheering and friendly rivalry as students sat with others from their houses. The food stall added to the festive atmosphere as children thronged to the stalls to grab some snacks in between the excitement. The races were intertwined with the prize ceremony with medals and trophies handed out to the team and individual winners.
The details are listed below:
The Intra-Mural Competitions consist of team events and competitions that students represent their houses in. These events were conducted under the Sub-Junior, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior categories and included both indoor and outdoor games such as Football, Hockey, Chess, and Carrom. A total of 354 medals and certificates (both the winners and the runners-up) were issued for these events and each victory chalked up points for the Houses. Explorers bagged the prizes in a majority of these events and won the Intra-Mural Championship Trophy.
The track and field events were held across categories and began a few weeks before the Sports Day with selections. The semi-finals and finals held on Sports Day generated a lot of zeal and added flavour to the day. Athletes proudly represented their Houses and the winners not only brought joy but also added points. Indeed, a whopping 296 certificates and trophies were handed over to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Fifteen of these athletes, ranging from the Pre-Junior 1 boys and girls to the Senior category were awarded the Individual Championship trophy and certificate in recognition of their stellar all-round performances. Voyagers scored the most points over the other houses to win the Athletics Trophy.
Despite a tight and tough opposition, the young sportsmen and sportswomen sporting the colour blue won handsomely and deservedly, the Voyagers were crowned the Overall Championship Trophy winners and revelled in their victory. Our Principal, Mrs. Sudha Balan congratulated all the winners and encouraged greater participation in all such sporting events as she handed over the Individual and House trophies. It was a momentous day for one and all.
